Junior national player and Vidyartha College third row forward Jason Dissanayake has surely made a mark this season with his robust runs and crunching tackles playing for the champion Vidyartha College side this year.
The soft spoken Dissanayake who is a part of the unbeaten and record breaking ‘B’ division champs Vidyartha College stands apart with a remarkable feat! The achievement being that he has accumulated 34 tries to his name during the season which amounts up to 170 points in the league together with 16 conversions to end with an astonishing 202 points to his name. This will surely go down in the record books as one of the highest by any player in the history of the schools league.
However with all the light shining on Dissanayake, there is a quandary regarding the game against St. Johns College on its legality where he went over for 5 tries. Speaking to the secretary of the Sri Lanka schools rugby football union, Susantha Mendis stated that though he has scored so many points in the league tournament we still have to wait till the outcome of the inquiry which is to be held tomorrow regarding the validity of the game between Vidyartha College and St. Johns College where Vidyartha hammered their opponents 203 points to nil in a debatable match at Nittewela.
Nevertheless, even after deducting the points he bagged during the game against St. Johns College (5 tries = 25) he would still stand with over 170 points which would give him the label as the highest points scorer in the league tournament surpassing the Royal’s Arshad Jamaldeen who stands at 148 points. Jamaldeen who broke the 9 year old record of the former St. Peters College dashing winger Rinaz Mohomed (140 points) just this year had 148 points with 3 tries, 38 conversions, 18 penalties an 1 drop goal.
Jason isn’t the only player to go the distance. Vidyartha College center three-quarter and senior man Danushka Thalwaththa has also gotten in on the big numbers scoring more than 170 points in the league tournament. Thalwaththa who is a burly center has a bagful of tries with his highlight coming in the controversial St. Johns game where he scored 7 tries.
It will be interesting to see what stance the SLSRFA would take on the matter. Keep it logged on to ThePapare for more details.
