Vidyartha College swamped St Sylvester’s College by 64 points (7 goals, 3 tries) to 11 (1 try 2 penalties) in their schools Under-20 Division One Segment ‘B’ rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At the breather Vidyartha led 33-8.
Before the commencement of the match both teams were introduced to the chief guest Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
This match was also played for the PMML Banda-Bertie Nillagoda Memorial Trophy and the winners Vidyartha College were presented with this trophy by the guest of honour Brigadier Senerath Bandara.
Vidyartha College completely dominated play and their three quarters displayed a lot of thrust and in most occasions when they took possession of the ball, it ended in scoring.
St Sylvester’s College on the other hand lacked power and positioned play which failed to prevent Vidyartha from running up a big score.
This was also Vidyartha’s sixth successive win for the season and look set to snap up the ‘B’ Segment title.
Vidyartha College scored tries through centre Dhanushka Talwatte (4), skipper and lock forward Ayesh Gallawela (2), No 8 Jason Dissanayake (3), scrum half Chamath Fernando (1) who also goalled 7 tries to bring his personal tally in the match to 19 points. For the Sylvesterian flanker Lasith Attanagoda scored a try and the 2 penalties were put over by full back Hewa Liyanage.
