Meet the schools:
S M Jiffrey ABDEEN- Kandy Sports correspondent
Vidyartha College, Kandy is fielding an immensely talented rugby team this schools season.
Though they are playing in the Segment ‘B’ of the schools under 20 Division one rugby tournament they are as good as some of the teams in Segment ‘A’ and their current performance will give them a place in the top division next year.

The team is led by third year player and lock forward Ayesh Galahawela who led the side well to beat all their opponents. He has also excelled in the line outs which has resulted in a glut of tries.
Vidyartha College’s forte has been their three quarters who have punched holes in their opponents defence to run up big scores. Centre Danushka Talwatte has performed well with his hard and incisive running to score 27 tries this season. No.8 Jason Dissanayake too has done well to score 28 tries and also goalling 15 of those time scoring 170 points during the season. Jason Dissanayake who started playing last year as a centre three quarter is often seen playing with the line as old habits die hard. Both Danushka Talwatte and Jason Dissanayake are in the junior national pool with the latter gaining junior national honours.
Vidyartha’s record this season beat D S Senanayake College 44-7, beat C W W Kanangara Vidyalaya 63-0, beat Zahira College 51-0, beat Mahanama College 37-36, beat St Anne’s College 136-0, beat St Sylveter’s College 66-11, beat Royal College, Panadura 65-17, beat Ananda College 43-11. Thus they have totted up 505 points upto their match against Ananda College. With two games to go, they are in line to set up a new record number of points in schools rugby.
Vidyartha College is coached by former Vidyartha College, Kandy Sports Club and national poolist Anil Jayasinghe who later handled the whistle with distinction to become one of the top rugby referees in the country with international exposure.
Anil Jayasinghe also coached Trinity College and became the first Vidyarthian to do so. He has done an excellent job by moulding the side into a fighting outfit. He has been dead on target to identify talent and this has yielded results. Vidyartha has only five senior players but still they have performed well.
