William Gopallawa Shield Rugby:
Four scintillating tries by Vidyartha College Kavinda Perera spearheaded his side to a 41 points (3 goals, 4 tries) to 19 (2 goals, 1 try) win over Ananda College in their William Gopallawa Shield Rugby encounter plated at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium, Kandy yesterday. At half time Vidyartha led 17-14.
Before the match commenced the two teams were introduced to the Chief Guest and former Minister of Sports C. B. Ratnayake and the special guests Prabath Siritunga, Bharatha Dodankotuwa and P. A. S. Alwis.
It was Ananda College opened scoring in 16th minute through a try by winger Weshan Randiv which was goalled by scrum half Asanka Hemaratne. But in the 18th minute Vidyatha managed to reduce the lead to 5-7 when centre Kavindu Prera touched down by the right corner flag and scrum half Chamath Fernando could not add the extra points. In the 23rd minute Vidyartha’s aggressive full back Isuru Fernando joined the three quarters to score by the right corner flag and Chamath Fernando this time added the extra points. Vidyartha led 12-5.The Anandians playing better rugby through their forwards surprised Vidyartha again when centre Nadeera Kodituwakku dived over by right corner flag and Asanka Hemaratne added the extra points. But the Anandians could not step their opponents from wresting the lead again when centre Kavindu Perera sliced through to score by the left corner flag. This try went unconverted.
Fortunes continued to fluctuate thereafter in the second half, but with about ten minutes to go for the final whistle Vidyartha finally got their act together when centre Kavindu Perera tore through Ananda defence to score far left and this try went unconverted. With four minutes it was once again centre Kavindu Perera who was seen in action when he collected the ball from the ruck and raced towards the right corner flag and cut in to touch under the post and Chamath Fernando added the extra points.
With play now moving into injury time, scrum half Chamath Fenando spotting a gap deep down the Ananda defence cut through to go around to score under the post and added the extra points himself.
Vidyartha now level the series with Ananda at 22 wins each’
