The 1st XV rugby team of Vidyartha College, Kandy, has managed to outshine many seasoned rugby playing schools in this season and secure the 5th place in the points table.
Vidyartha 1st XV rugby is sponsored by ‘Closeup’ gel toothpaste of Unilever Sri Lanka.
Vidyartha’s performance throughout the season has been exceptional and they have managed to defeat rugby giants such as Kingswood, St. Anthony’s, St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s College teams in thrilling and entertaining games of rugby during this school season. Their victories against those four schools and D. S. Senanayake College have provided them with motivation and determination to become a team to reckon with in the future.
Congratulating the Vidyartha team on their stunning performance, Jiffry Jameel, Brand Manager, ‘Closeup’ said; “As one of Unilever’s prominent youth brands, ‘Closeup’ wishes to support the youth in creating new frontiers for them and sports sponsorships such as these provide the ideal platforms to do so. This was ‘Closeup’s first ever youth sport sponsorships and we are elated with Vidyartha’s performance.”
Commenting on the College team’s glorious performance this season, Mr. W. Alwis, Principal of Vidyartha College, said; “Though the College has been playing rugby for many years, after being in Group ‘B’ last year, the team was promoted to ‘A’ Division this year. It is extremely encouraging to see how well the boys have performed and we believe that the support received from our sponsor ‘Closeup’ was a crucial factor in these victories.” He also mentioned that they have ambitious plans of building their rugby team further to bring them to national level and to produce many players who could represent the national team.
