Gallant Vidyartha College virtually snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by winning over Kingswood College by 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 penalty) to 17 (1 goal, 2 tries) in their Singer Under 20 ‘A’ division league rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday.
At half time Kingswood led 12-8.
Kingswood dominated play for the major part of the match but they paid the penalty towards the end for some unwarranted play which saw four of their players being yellow carded at different stages of the game including No. 8. Uvin Ariyaratne, their best player who scored two tries and was sent to ‘sin bin’ in the last 10 minutes of play for arguing with the referee.
During this time Vidyartha scored their winning try following a 70-metre run by fly half Ashan Bandara who touched down under the posts. Scrum half Chamath Fernando added the extra points.
Kingswood at one stage led 17-8.
Vidyartha’s other try scorers were scrum half Kavindu Perera and No. 8 Jason Dissanayake. Chamath Fernando also put over a penalty.
For Kingswood winger Eranga Ariyapala and No. 8 Uvin Ariyaratne (2) scored one of which was goaled by scrum half Kosala Perera.
